❤️Boarding a Dog with Medical Needs: What You Should Expect

I've cared for dogs on multiple daily medications, dogs requiring insulin injections, dogs with epilepsy, dogs recovering from surgery, and dogs with complex dietary needs. "Too much to handle" is rarely actually true — it just requires the right boarder. Here's what to look for and what to ask.

The Most Common Medical Needs I See

In order of how often I encounter them: daily oral medications (pills, liquids), insulin injections for diabetic dogs, post-surgical care and activity restrictions, thyroid medication, epilepsy medication and seizure protocols, and allergies requiring specific foods or environmental management. None of these are dealbreakers. They just require clear communication and a committed, organized boarder.

What You Need to Provide

Written instructions are your best friend. Don't rely on verbal instructions alone — write everything down. Medication name, dose, timing, how it's given (with food? before food?), and what to watch for if something seems off. Bring enough medication for the full stay plus a couple of extra days in case of any delays. And make sure your vet's phone number is on the list.

What to Ask Your Boarder

Have you given injections before? How do you track medication administration? What's your protocol if my dog has a reaction or seizure? Have you ever dealt with a diabetic dog? These are fair, important questions. A boarder with experience will answer them directly and confidently.

The Honest Truth About Big Facilities

Large boarding facilities often can't accommodate medical needs — not because the staff don't care, but because the staff-to-dog ratio makes individual medication management genuinely difficult to do safely. A home boarder who's caring for two or three dogs can dedicate the attention needed to do this properly.

Medically complex dogs are welcome.

Let's talk through your dog's needs at the meet and greet. I'll ask all my questions and you ask yours — and we'll figure out together if it's the right fit.
