🏠Home-Based Dog Boarding vs. a Kennel — Here's the Honest Difference

I want to be upfront: I run a home-based dog boarding service, so yes, I have a preference. But I also know that what works for one dog doesn't work for every dog. So here's the most honest comparison I can give you — so you can actually make the right call for your pup.

What a Traditional Kennel Looks Like

Most traditional boarding kennels have runs — individual enclosures where dogs sleep and spend a lot of their time. There's usually structured outdoor time (often in groups) and staff who care for multiple dogs at once. Good kennels are clean, safe, and professionally run. For some dogs — particularly confident, social dogs who can handle the noise and stimulation — a kennel is totally fine. For others, it's really stressful.

What Home Boarding Looks Like (At Least, Here)

Your dog lives in my house. They're on the couch, in the yard, following me around while I make dinner. There's no crate unless your dog uses one at home and genuinely prefers it. The group is tiny — I keep it at max 2–3 dogs — so every dog gets real attention, not divided attention across a room full of animals. It's close to how they live at home, just with a different family.

Which Is Actually Better for Your Dog?

Honestly, it depends on your dog. Anxious dogs, dogs who are used to sleeping in your bed, senior dogs, and dogs with medical needs almost always do better in a home environment. Confident, high-energy dogs who love being around lots of other dogs can sometimes handle a kennel just fine — though most owners I talk to prefer home boarding once they've tried it. The biggest difference? The dog comes home as themselves. Calm, happy, not depleted. That's what I aim for.

Questions to Ask Either Option

Whether you're looking at a kennel or a home boarder, always ask: How many animals are in the care at once? Where do they sleep? What happens if my dog gets sick or injured? Can I see the space before booking? A trustworthy provider will answer every one of these without hesitation.

Come see the space before you decide.

Every new dog gets a free meet and greet — bring them over, let them sniff around, and see if it feels right. No pressure, no commitment.
