🦴Dog Walking vs. Daycare: What Does Your Dog Actually Need?

Both dog walking and dog daycare solve the same underlying problem — your dog needs attention and activity during the day while you're busy — but they solve it in very different ways. Here's how to think through which one is the right fit for your dog's actual needs.

When Dog Walking Is the Right Call

Dog walking is a great option when your dog is generally fine at home on their own but needs a physical and mental break in the middle of the day. It gives them outdoor time, sniffing time, exercise, and a break from the boredom of staring at the same walls for eight hours. Most dogs do really well with a midday walk — it's a routine they can count on, and it tides them over until you get home. Walking is also typically easier on the budget and more flexible to schedule.

When Daycare Makes More Sense

Daycare is the better option when your dog struggles with being alone — whether that's separation anxiety, destructive behaviour when left, or just a level of social and physical need that a single walk can't meet. A high-energy breed that walks in the door at 5pm and is still bouncing off the walls might need more than a 30-minute midday break. Puppies who need socialization, dogs with anxiety who do better in company — these are daycare dogs.

Some Dogs Need Both

On high-demand days — long meetings, back-to-back calls, a day when you know you'll be home late — some clients do a walk plus a drop-off. It's not an either-or if the situation calls for both. Flexibility is the whole point.

The Question to Ask Yourself

"Is my dog struggling because they need more exercise, or because they need more company?" If it's exercise, a good walk solves it. If it's company — if they're stressed and panicky when left, not just bored — daycare is likely the better fit.
